Performance Research
Breaking Classical, a deconstruction of ballet intersects with rhizomatic inquiries relating to and reflecting upon tradition, history, cultural humanities, feminist theory, all while standing in personal truths.
First commissioned by Alberta Bair Theatre's OPI Outreach in 2016 and performed at the Billings Library Community Room February 14th, 2017 as a performance lecture featuring Olivia Brown, Krista Leigh Pasini, Allison Kazmierski, and Carolyn Coefield. Each artists contributed work towards their personal reflections on ballet aesthetics, culture, and body politics and related them to larger contexts that stoked ongoing performative work and potent dialogue.
Each of the four solos, and collected reflections, were gifted to another artist to respond to - creating a performative exchange spanning 5 years. Responding artists Billie Parrott, Daniel Mont Eton, Erica Gionfriddo, and Lisa Oppegaard each held the initial inquiries, as well as their own, to create work that represented a conscious process of engagement with the material in different performative contexts. To perform the work, the artists entered into a personal process beyond entertaining an audience.
Additional Contributors: Tiffany Miller Designs conceptualized and designed all the garments for this project.
Sound and Music permissions: Michael Wall, Janek Schaefer, Matthew Burtner, Handel, Stravinsky, and Tchaikovsky
