Artist in Residence @ The Visible Vault | Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings, MT
Krista is the current Artist in Residence at the Yellowstone Art Museum (July 2024 - January 2025). Through out her residency in the Gary & Melissa Oakland Studio in the Visible Vault, Krista will be exploring several projects in various modes, from performative memoir to social sculpture installations. Her work is inspired by the life experiences and ultimate death of her father, who battled with a progressive neurological brain disease for twenty years and maintained a tedious journaling system to cope with memory loss. Krista hopes to, through her time in the Vault, explore an environment where her father's story is an invitation to connect, play, witness, and cultivate a culture of remembering, letting go, and honoring the common bonds that we share as individuals, as families, as communities, as a humanity amid partial wholeness.

Death steals everything except our stories. - Jim Harrison
The Post-it Note Project was inspired by the life (and death) of Terry Marshall, Krista’s father, who died at the age of sixty-nine from a progressive neurological brain disease called Lewy Body Dementia. He endured twenty years without a formal diagnosis and coped with memory loss through a tedious journaling system and an obsessive use of post-it notes. When his daughter, Krista, asked if she could tell his story he replied, "yes, you should name it 'stuck on you'."
In the 10 years since Terry has left, Stuck on You has evolved outward to include a longer meditation about loss, memory, and community. A collection of six storied vignettes serve as intimate journal entries in a story anchored around one person’s life, but then reflected into ekphrastic performative memoirs that bring the words out of the journals and into a shared experience. The overall nature of Stuck on You has always been about connection, empathy, and a sincere dose of playfulness. Rather than telling her father’s story in a biographical way, the proposed works embrace his sentimental nostalgia, his generous nature, curious mind, and quirky humor. |
